Valentine’s Day: Where does it come from?

Valentine’s Day is approaching, an emblematic date that has both admirers and detractors. The true is that the origin of the festivity dedicated to the love and couples is dated back to the antiquity, and nowadays millions of people around the world celebrate it every year.

Even some of those declared as this day “not followers”, accept with not too hidden excitement the gift that their partner surprise with. Maybe you are part of this group, or maybe you are a true fan of love’s celebration; maybe your partner is and despite you don’t share his/her preferences, you don’t want to disappoint her/him in such an important date.

But… let’s know a little bit how the romantic festivity par excellence was born, considering that its origin is dated in the ancient Rome. And the thing is that as many other important festivities of our days, Valentine’s Day has its origin on a pagan tradition.

Valentine’s Day first celebration is dated on February 14th of the year 496, date when it was included in the catholic calendar. But the pope Gelasio the 1st to chose this date wasn’t by chance: it coincides with pagan’s fertility festivity, known as Lupercalia, that the romans celebrated from february 13th to 15th. Some adjustments should be made so the day 14 as selected, let’ see why.

Valentine’s Day: from pagan’s to everybody’s festivity

Catholic Church’s intention in its effort to finish with paganism was to replace all pagan origin festivities for others of christian origin.

So, making use of the fact that in the second half of 3rd century existed three saints named Valentine and that following the catholic tradition were executed on february 14th, the date was clear. Even so an important detail must be explained, the one that makes understand the romanticism connected to this day.

It seems to be that one of the three Valentines executed  was a roman doctor converted into a priest. This Valentine opposed to the emperor Claudius 2nd when prohibited the marriage between young lovers, so the young soldiers, which were the best, wouldn’t have any sentimental tie. But the brave priest secretly continued marrying young couples until he was discovered and executed on a february 14th.

This is the origin of this celebration’s history and as it became more and more popular around the world, saint’s prominence was yield to the lovers. Finally, it was known as Valentine’s Day, date when couples exchange presents to commemorate their love.
