New DGT rule requiring motorcyclists to wear gloves

Riding a motorbike isn’t just a convenient way get around, especially on urban routes. A motorcycle is also a leisure vehicle, and for many people represents a way of life.  Getting ready for a route wearing proper clothing, boots, gloves, helmet and check the bike before starting the journey, is almost a ritual. 

In addition to how practical and pleasant is riding a motorbike, there’s another important question related to this mean of transport, and is safety, its most vulnerable point. For that reason, accessories like helmet, boots, gloves and other specific garments, have a vital role when moving on a motorbike, to the point of being some of them mandatory. To helmet’s obligatory nature, now wearing gloves will be mandatory for bikers, as the Spanish “Dirección General de Tráfico (or DGT)” has stated on its digital publication. 

There isn’t yet a specific date when this obligatory nature will become effective, but it could be any time now.  So, if you use to ride motorbike but don’t wear gloves, the time to get at least a pair of them has come. Are they mandatory only for riders or for passengers too?

This is another of the pending points, knowing if glove’s wear will only be mandatory for the motorcycle driver or also for the passenger. It’s also still pending to confirm if glove’s obligatory nature will only apply on open routes or also on urban routes.  Fines for not wearing gloves are also unknown, or if they will be comparable to not wearing helmet, what means loss of 3 points on driver’s license and a 200 Euros fine.

Gloves not only protect our hands in case of falling, but from weather changes, scratches, dirt and other unexpected events that might come up during the driving.

In case of falling, if biker’s equipment is complete, injuries are significantly reduced. Due the pavement is so abrasive, if we don’t wear gloves injuries on hands could be very important, even with permanent effects. So, DGT’s initiative to make glove’s wearing mandatory for all bikers, is more than recommended.
