The first buckles appeared in the Ancient Greece and during the Roman Empire. They were mainly used on military equipment: scabbard and cuirass belts or to hold the saddles and stirrups. They were made of metal, bone and ivory and because of their simplicity and durability their use spreaded with the time to clothing and footwear.
Buckle’s origins is a bit confuse. There are experts that maintain that was in the Ancient Rome. For others, its inventor was an italian blacksmith during the 16th Century. Any which way, its beginning was more a practical question than something esthetic. So, for example, the british sailors from the Elizabethan period, popularized their use due the need of an efficient way to keep the trousers fasten due to the severe climatic conditions in high seas.
Regarding the cowboys, in our previous article about the belts, we already explained you that the image of the cowboy wasn’t always the icon that Hollywood films idealized and mythicized. The first cowboys used to dress very practical and worn suspenders. Later on, the Civil War popularized the belts with friction buckles. And it wasn’t until beginnings of 20th Century that Hollywood started to create its own image of the cowboy with its typical elements. Although their deffinitive look, with those strong belts and spectacular buckles would not arrive until de 50’s. Maybe influenced by Elvis Presley success, for some people inventor of the oversized buckles .
