John Batterson Stetson’s legacy

It is said that cowboy hat was created by John Batterson Stetson, son from a New Jersey’s master hatter that arrived to Colorado during 1860’s colonizing expansion, after a long trip across north american territory and having to fight against tuberculosis.

It is unknown how the idea came up and it is said that all started like a joke. On that time, the colonist worn different hat styles, but none with a wide brim. However, Stetson created the “Boss of the plain”, the first wide brim hat in the market. It was a difficult starting, but after four years of uncertainty, people saw its practicality and became tremendously popular.

His first hats were made with rabbit skin, high crown and with a much wider brim than the one seen in any other hat so far. Perfect to beat the cold, cover from the rain and protect from sun rays.

It was a very useful hat. And that was the reason of its success, becoming a classic after more than 150 years. But it is much more than an icon or symbol.

Nowadays, western hats are not only made with rabbit skin. Now that the good weather is here, we can find cowboy hats made of felt, straw, canvas or plastic, perfect for the warm days that are coming up.
