SENDRA BOOTS, A CENTENARY BRAND

It could sound curious, but some of the most appreciated boots in the world are produced in Almansa, a little village in Castilla la Mancha (Spain). In this village, pertaining to Albacete’s province, are located Sendra Boots headquarters, a brand with more than 100 years of history dedicated to design and production of boots.

It started as a small family enterprise but the time, experience and ability to evolve in every time, converted Sendra Boots in one the most reconized boot brands in the world.

More than 100 years of history

Sendra Boots’ history is defined by the four generations of the same family that have dedicated their lifes to their passion. From the founder Andrés Sendra, to his great grandson Francisco Javier Sendra, current CEO and owner.

All started in 1905, after several years living in the United States, Andrés Sendra, son of a tannery owners, come back to Almansa deeply impressed by the cowboy culture and the style of the boots people worn there, with fine toes and intrincate designs. He became a footwear passionate and in 1913 founded Sendra Boots with his brother Vicente, initially dedicated to produce molded boots similar in style to the traditional Camperos Boots.

A few years later, specificaly in 1919, after the development by United Shoes Machinery of the Goodyear welt shoe construction technology, Sendra brothers decided to take a step forward by purchasing that equipment, being conscious about the quality leap that will achieve in the production of Sendra Boots. It should be pointed out that, even nowadays, there are just a few brands able to produce footwear using this patented system.

In 1926 the factory moved to Campanario Street, popularly known as “La Placeta Sendra” (Sendra Square), to give space for new and much larger premises, where the production remainded until 80’s decade. The Spanish Civil War outbreak in 1936 caused impact in the whole country and the production was dramatically reduced because the lack of leather and resources but with big effort the factory remained active.

It took fifty years to the next milestone on brand’s history. In 1960, after decades of difficulties and impossibility to open markets outside Spain, the international expansion started with brand’s disemarking in the United States of America. A true acid test for the brand that, unexpectedly, turned out to be a much bigger success than initially planned. After several years, the expansion continued, first in Germany in 1965 and later on in the rest of Europe, Russia, Asia and Brazil, supported by Sendra Boots’ presence in the most important fashion and footwear shows around the world.

In the year 1988 Sendra Boots developed a new product line with the presentation of a boots’ collection that since then remains as part of its essence together with the cowboy style: the biker boots. Just in a few years, the brand became established as biker culture icon.

Short time later, in 1994, Fashion collection appeared to open doors to new trends and fashion world. After the inauguration of the new factory in 1995 – keeping its location in Almansa but moving to an industrial estate to meet the requirements of more capable and up-to-date facilities -, Sendra makes its way on the catwalk with big names of the international fashion design that included the brand in their collections. In the year 2000 Sendra joined Custo Barcelona during its New York Fashion Week’s Parade.

Despite entering the world of fashion, and the continued evolution and development of new models thanks a passionated creative team , the brand has never lost its essence, so, cowboy and biker boots keep being Sendra Boots’ keystones.

Goodyear welt, a trademark

If there is something that characterizes Sendra boots is their high quality. You can feel it in all aspects: from the raw materials, to the finishing; careful and traditional handcrafted manufacture. A specially labourious production process that spans up to 250 different steps among which stands out the Goodyear welt, the technology that extolled this brand.

Goodyear system consist of a double welt that joins the leather to boot’s outsole, providing an extraordinary resistance and durability: While an internal welt holds the upper leather to the insole and turns it, another external welt joins the welt inseam to the outsole. This way, the outsole is formed by two soles separated in betwen by a cork conglomerate layer that works as a thermal insulation and provide greater comfort when walking.
