Ariat, a brand inspired by a horse

Beth Cross, Ariat International’s co-founder and executive director, was born and grew in a thoroughbred farm in Pensilvania. There, surrounded by animals on an environment with passion for the horse riding and outdoor activities, acquired the inspiration that, when adult, let she found her own brand. And precisely was the legendary 1973 Triple Crown winner racehorse, who had a lot to do with this. Let’s know him.

A winner horse inspiration for a winner brand

Secretariat, so was the name of this thoroughbred, is considered the best racehorse of all times. Nowadays, Secretariat’s grave, in Clairbone, has always fresh flowers, and his statue in Belmont is place of pilgrimage for equestrianism enthusiasts. When Secretariat died in 1989 with nineteen years, the medical examiners made a surprising discovery: his heart’ size was quite bigger than a normal horse one. This anatomical particularity is the explanation that Secretariat, called “The Big Red”, for being able to run as the wind. 

This horse became a milestone in 1973 winning that season’s three most important races: Kentucky’s Derby (Louisville), Preakness Stakes (Baltimore) and Belmont Stakes (New York). In the three events Secretariat set times that nowadays haven’t yet been beaten: 1:59 in Louisville, 1:53 in Baltimore and 2:24 in New York.  

Since thoroughbred are considered athletes in the US, Secretariat was recognized by Sports Illustrated like one of the best athletes of the history until 1973. This award was a result of winning the “Triple Crown” beating time records in the three mentioned races. He was also voted and classified in 35th possition from 20th Century’s best United States athletes. It isn’t strange that this mythical creature of constant competitive spririt to inspire Ariat’s brand, that as the thoroughbred, is unstopable on its race to the success and innovation.

Ariat International was founded in 1992, and its first riding boots were created in 1993, calling them “the new breed of boot”. The reason is that Ariat was the first brand to integrate sport’s footwear technology on athletic equestrian boots.

At present, Ariat is world’s biggest equestrian clothing and footwear brand.  Counts more than 6.500 retail points and a team of 500 employees located at the offices in north California, United Kingdom, China, Mexico and Japan.
